"FaceApp Privacy Concerns" Podcast Review
I have listened to a podcast about “FaceApp’s Privacy Concerns” by Krithiga Narayanan from The Journalist Podcast. It is about the trending ageing photo modification app that has captured the attention of the world is facing the heat regarding the privacy concerns it brought.
This app has been popular for a while, soon after it shot to the top of the Apple and Google store charts this week, privacy advocates began waving warning flags about the Russian-made app’s vague legalese. Word spread quickly that the app might be a disinformation campaign or secretly downloading your entire photo album. I believe the company has used a strategy of using the new AI technology to attract more users in order to gain benefit from it.
Krithiga has also stated another evidence that the US government has sent the FBI to investigate the Russia company that created this app, it shows that this app’s policy might transfer users’ personal information around the world, which I think it is such an excessive act to do. Krithiga shows another example that FaceApp has provided a function of changing users into different races, the act has become controversial that it is racist or trying to mock other races.
As an ex-user of FaceApp, I think most users like me would not pay too much attention to the policy of the app, as long as it provides a lot of fun. Users tend to ignore the seriousness of personal information getting violated. Compared to other apps like Instagram and Facebook, this app has violated the rules of properly handling the personal information of the users. Those apps mentioned above would at least protect the personal information of users and make sure no third party will get it. I think Krithiga has clearly stated the issue of the privacy concerns by introducing this trendy FaceApp, which also raised the awareness of social media users that we should understand the policy of the app before using it.
